A gift handle links an amount to what it achieves: “£5 will pay for a day’s meals for a family.” Supporters respond to seeing the difference their gift makes, and gift handles let you show that on your donation forms instead of bare amounts. You build them once in a library, then choose which ones each form offers.

Before you start

  • Engage must be enabled for your beehive.
  • To see the library you need engage:read:forms. To add, change or delete gift handles you also need engage:write:forms.

Add a gift handle

  1. Go to Engage → Gift Handles.
  2. Choose New gift handle.
  3. Enter the Amount. Gift handles default to GBP. Forms take payments in GBP, so a gift handle in another currency won’t be offered on them.
  4. Enter a Title (up to 120 characters), such as “A day’s meals for a family”.
  5. Enter a Description (up to 1,000 characters), such as “£5 will pay for a day’s meals for a family.”
  6. Optionally, choose Add a photo. PNG, JPG, GIF or WebP files of up to 10 MB are accepted.
  7. Choose Save.

The gift handle appears in the library as a card showing its photo, amount, title and description.

If you see Photo not saved, the gift handle was saved without its photo. Choose the edit button on its card and add the photo again.

Change or delete a gift handle

On the gift handle’s card, choose the edit (pencil) button to change it, then Save. Use Replace photo or Remove photo to change its picture.

To delete it, choose the delete (bin) button and confirm with Delete.

Deleting a gift handle can’t be undone, and it’s removed from every form offering it. Published forms stop showing it. If it was the only one a form offered, that form can’t be published again until you choose others.

Edits to amounts and wording show on published forms as soon as you save, so check which forms use a gift handle before changing what it says.

Offer gift handles on a form

  1. Open the form in the builder and go to Money. Add a gift with Take a gift on this form if the form doesn’t take one yet.
  2. Under How much?, choose The supporter decides.
  3. Switch the suggestions from Suggested amounts to Gift handles.
  4. Tick up to six gift handles. The count shows, for example, “3 of 6 chosen”.
  5. Save or publish the form as usual.

Supporters see each chosen gift handle as an option with its photo, amount, title and description, and can still choose Other to give their own amount.

A gift handle can’t be offered, and is marked in the list, if:

If gift handles you’d chosen have since been deleted, the pane says they won’t be shown. The form can’t be published while it’s set to gift handles but none are chosen, or none can be offered; see Publish checks.

Use Manage gift handles in the Money pane to open the library. If it’s empty, Create gift handles takes you there.
