A membership type is one of the memberships you offer, such as “Individual annual” or “Family membership”. It sets who the membership covers, what it costs, when it expires and when it starts to lapse. Set your types up before you issue memberships.
Before you start
- You need
memberships:admin:typesto create, edit or archive types, andmemberships:read:membershipsto see them. See the permission catalogue. - Decide on scope and pricing before you save. You can’t change a type’s Scope or Pricing afterwards.
Create a type
- In the sidebar, open Memberships → Membership types, then choose New membership type.
- Enter a Name and, if you like, a Description. Under Benefits, put one benefit on each line.
- Choose a Scope:
- Individual covers one person.
- Group covers several people. Set Maximum members (at least 2) if you want a cap.
- Choose the Pricing: Free, One-off payment or Recurring payment. For a paid type, enter a Price greater than zero and a Currency (GBP is filled in for you).
-
Choose the Expiry policy:
Policy What to enter What it means Fixed term Term length and Term unit (Months or Years) Expires that long after the membership’s start date Calendar anniversary Renewal date (MM-DD), for example 04-06Renews on the same date each year Never expires Nothing The membership never lapses or expires - Set the Lapsing window length and Lapsing window unit. This is how long before expiry a membership is marked Lapsing. It starts at 1 month.
- Choose Create type. The new type may take a moment to appear in the list.
What the list shows
Each type shows its Name, Scope, Pricing, Expiry and Status (Active or Archived). Turn on Show archived to include types you’ve stopped offering.
Edit a type
Choose the edit icon on the type’s row, make your changes and choose Save changes.
Keep in mind how changes reach existing memberships:
- Expiry policy: a membership’s expiry date is worked out when it’s created, renewed or has its start date changed. Existing expiry dates aren’t recalculated when you edit the type.
- Lapsing window: statuses are refreshed once a day using the type’s current lapsing window, so a change here can move existing memberships into or out of Lapsing.
- Price: the dashboard’s Expected income uses current type prices, so a price change also changes that figure.
Stop offering a type
Choose the archive icon on the type’s row, then Yes, archive it. An archived type is no longer offered for new memberships. Existing memberships of that type carry on as before.
If something goes wrong
- “Enter a price greater than zero.” Paid types need a price. If the membership is free, choose Free pricing instead.
- “Enter the renewal date as MM-DD.” Use two digits for the month, then two for the day, such as
09-01for 1 September. - “Enter a maximum of at least 2 members.” A group type covers at least two people. Use Individual for one person.
Next, issue a membership.
